The Alliance of National Forces have confirmed the death of former Libyan Prime Minister, Dr. Mahmoud Jibril, who died as a result of complications from Coronavirus.

Before his death, the 67-year-old was quarantined for 12 days at al-Ganzori hospital in Cairo, Egypt’s capital.

Below are some of his lifetime achievements:

  • He was a member of the National Transitional Council after the overthrow of the regime of the late Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi since March 5, 2011.
  • He held  the position of Secretary of the National Planning Council, and Director of the Economic Development Board during the era of Muammar Gaddafi, and after the 2011 revolution he set up the National Forces Alliance Political Party.
  • After the February 17 revolution that toppled the regime of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi, he headed the transitional government of the Libyan National Transitional Council on March 23, 2011, and made great efforts to persuade Western countries to recognize the council as a legitimate representative of the Libyan people.
  • Jibril had been interim prime minister for about seven months in 2011 and resigned after Gaddafi was captured and killed in the city of Sirte.
  • He had once been touted as a key force in Libyan politics and a potential president, but the country remained divided by conflict after 2011.
