The referee, Nikita Danchenkov, said in a video address that he had been hospitalized for several hours after the incident. He was visibly injured, with two lacerations and a black eye.

Shirokov apologized for the incident in a statement on his Instagram page, saying: “I would like to express my sincere apologies to Nikita for such an inappropriate act committed by me.”

Police are conducting an investigation into the incident, following a complaint by the victim’s family, state media reported.

Shirokov’s lengthy professional career included a spell at Zenit St Petersburg, where he won the 2008 UEFA Cup, and saw him picked 57 times for Russia.
