International Breaking News: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Dies at 100

Jimmy Carter, the 100-year-old former U.S. president and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia, after nearly two years in hospice care.

Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, leaves behind a legacy of both triumphs and challenges. His presidency saw historic achievements, such as the Camp David Accords, which brokered peace between Egypt and Israel, and the creation of the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. Yet, his time in office was also marked by the Iran hostage crisis, an energy crisis, and domestic economic struggles, including high inflation and unemployment. His leadership through these turbulent times, while not without controversy, solidified his reputation as a man committed to human rights and peace on the global stage.

Born James Earl Carter Jr. on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter grew up as the son of a farmer and a nurse in the rural South. His early life shaped his values of humility, service, and a deep connection to his community. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, he embarked on a distinguished career in the Navy, eventually joining the elite nuclear submarine program. His military service instilled in him a sense of duty, which later translated into his political career.

In 1953, following the death of his father, Carter returned to Georgia to manage the family farm. It was during this time that he began his involvement in local politics, serving on the county board of education and later as a state senator. His political journey culminated in his election as governor of Georgia in 1970, where he championed civil rights and government reform. His presidential campaign in 1976, based on a platform of honesty and integrity, captured the national imagination and led to his unexpected victory against Gerald Ford.

Carter’s influence extended far beyond his presidency. Alongside his wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023, he founded the Carter Center in 1982, an organization dedicated to advancing human rights, health, and democracy worldwide. The Carter Center played a pivotal role in eradicating diseases like Guinea worm disease and monitoring elections in some of the world’s most troubled regions.

In addition to his diplomatic efforts, Carter was a longtime volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, helping build homes for underserved communities both in the U.S. and abroad. His hands-on work with the organization exemplified his belief in the power of individuals to make a difference in the lives of others. The Carters’ dedication to improving the lives of others earned them the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as numerous other honors for their humanitarian efforts. Former President Bill Clinton once praised the couple for their unparalleled global contributions, saying they had done “more good for more people in more places than any other couple on Earth.”

Carter’s later years were marked by his resilience, continuing his work with the Carter Center and his public speaking, even as he faced health challenges. His decision to enter hospice care in 2023 was a final act of his humility and acceptance of life’s inevitable course. Despite his passing, his influence will endure.

He is survived by his children, Amy, Chip, Jack, and Jeff, as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Carter will be remembered not only as a statesman and former president but as a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights. His legacy as a man who sought to do good in the world will continue to inspire generations to come.
