Thierry Jacob, the former WBC super bantamweight boxing champion, has passed away at the age of 59, the mayor of his hometown, Calais, confirmed on Friday.
Jacob won the WBC super bantamweight title in 1992, defeating Mexico’s Daniel Zaragoza in a memorable bout held in his home city of Calais.
Mayor Natacha Bouchart shared the news on Facebook, expressing sorrow over the loss: “We begin this day with sad news. Thierry Jacob died overnight, so young.”
Jacob began his professional career in 1984, retiring a decade later with an impressive 39-6 record. His reign as WBC champion ended in his first title defense when he lost to American Tracy Harris Patterson in New York.
Jacob’s legacy in boxing continued through his son, Romain Jacob, who went on to claim the European super featherweight title in 2014.
