Four Argentine Footballers Under House Arrest For Alleged R*pe Of Journalist

Eko Hot Blog reports that three professional footballers in Argentina linked to the alleged r*pe of a sports journalist in a hotel room were placed under house arrest on Thursday by a judge.

The fourth player was released on bail.

Editor’s Pick:

The case involves a 24-year-old sports journalist who alleged that she was r*ped after being invited by Uruguay international Sebastian Sosa to a hotel room in Tucuman, Argentina, on March 3. She claims the other three defendants were also waiting in the room.

According to the journalist, she felt dizzy after having a few drinks, laid down on a bed, and was then r*ped.

A judge ordered a 90-day house arrest for three of the four defendants, who all play for the first-division club Velez Sarsfield: Braian Cufre, Jose Florentin, and Abiel Osario. The fourth player, Sebastian Sosa, was granted $57,000 bail and banned from leaving the country for 90 days.

Prosecutor Eugenia Posse is looking to bring rape charges against Cufre and Florentin, while Osario is accused of sexual abuse. Sosa is being charged as a secondary participant.

The prosecution had requested pre-trial detention for all four men to prevent interference in the investigation.

The players, who all testified in the hearing, could face prison sentences ranging from four to 20 years if convicted.

Velez Sarsfield, a prominent club in Buenos Aires, has suspended the four players and ordered an internal investigation, stating its “deepest concern about the reported events, which are clearly contrary to the principles and values of our institution.”

The hearing comes in the same week that a Spanish court freed former Brazil international Dani Alves on bail pending an appeal against his conviction for raping a woman in Barcelona.
