VIDEO: Four Buildings Collapse As Fire Guts 14 Structures On Lagos Island

  • Another fire incident has been reported on Lagos Island.
  • The fire originated from a three-storey building but spread to 13 other buildings.
  • Firefighters are on ground to put out the fire.

Eko Hot Blog reports that a fire has gutted at least 14 buildings situated near Jankara Street, adjacent to Docemo Street, on Lagos Island, Lagos.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, disclosed the development in a statement Tuesday evening.

She disclosed that the service was alerted to the fire on Tuesday morning.

The fire service boss also revealed that the fire, which impacted structures on Docemo and Nnamdi Azikwe Streets, led to the total collapse of two structures and a partial collapse of another two structures.

Mrs. Adeseye, however, noted that firefighters have successfully contained the fire.

She stated that no casualties have been reported, adding that the fire originated from the refueling of a generator, exacerbated by fuel storage in kegs at a penthouse housing a printing shop with chemical contents.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has acted swiftly in response to a significant fire outbreak originating from a three-story building situated at Jankara Street, adjacent to Docemo Street, on Lagos Island,” the statement reads.

“Alerted promptly at 10:37hrs on Tuesday, firefighting operations have been mobilized to contain the spreading inferno, which has already impacted adjacent structures on Docemo and Nnamdi Azikwe Streets after its initial occurrence at three buildings along Jankara Street.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has successfully contained a significant fire incident involving 14 buildings in Lagos Island. Unfortunately, two structures have collapsed entirely, with two partially collapsed.

“The fire originated from the refueling of a generator, exacerbated by fuel storage in kegs at a penthouse housing a printing shop with chemical contents.

“Swift actions by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service have brought the fire under control, transitioning to a damping down strategy to ensure public safety.

“Efforts to assess damage and implement preventive measures are ongoing. We appreciate the collaboration of all emergency responders at the scene.

“Caution is advised when handling combustible materials to prevent future incidents.”

The latest fire incident on Lagos Island continues a worrying trend of fire outbreaks in Lagos.
