Free Nnamdi Kanu — Sowore Calls On The Court

  • The Supreme Court is set to sit for the court hearing of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

  • Ahead of the court hearing, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has advocated for his release.

  • Nnamdi Kanu has been in a battle of wits with the Nigerian government owing to his Biafran secessionist movement.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Supreme Court of Nigeria is set to hear an appeal filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

The appeal is against his continuous detention at the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja.

Ahead of the hearing, Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, has called on the Supreme Court to be courageous enough to set Nnamdi Kanu free. Sowore, who is also a human rights activist, took to his Twitter page to make the appeal.

“#FreeNnamdiKanuNow. The Supreme Court of Nigeria must demonstrate courage today and stop the impunity of the lawless, inhuman and illegitimate Muhammadu Buhari flouting of court rulings. Let Mazi Nnamdi Kanu go! #Revolutionnow”, he said.

The appeal was filed on November 3, 2022, and is against the decision of the Court of Appeal, which stayed the execution of its earlier order acquitting Nnamdi Kanu of all charges and directing his release from the custody of the DSS.

Nnamdi Kanu’s detention has been a source of controversy, with his supporters calling for his release and accusing the Nigerian government of violating his human rights.

Kanu, who is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony and illegal possession of firearms, has been in detention since his arrest in June 2021.

The hearing of the appeal by the Supreme Court is expected to attract a lot of attention, with many people watching to see the outcome of the case.

It remains to be seen whether the Supreme Court will rule in favor of Nnamdi Kanu and order his release, or uphold his detention.
