The Federal Government has launched a free train ride initiative across the country to ease financial burdens and enable Nigerians to travel during the festive season.

The free train service, running from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025, is expected to transport over 340,000 passengers.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Speaking at the flag-off event at Kubwa train station in Abuja, the Acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Ben Iloanusi, revealed that the initiative began with a train departing from Abuja to Rigasa in Kaduna State.

He assured Nigerians of beefed-up security, crowd management measures, and seamless operations during the period.

Iloanusi explained that prospective passengers must book tickets online at no cost and present valid identification at the station. For those unable to book online, staff will profile them before boarding.

He emphasized the importance of arriving at least 45 minutes before departure to ensure a smooth process.

The free train rides will cover several routes, including Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos-Mass Transit, and Warri-Itakpe.

The NRC has restricted ticket purchases to a maximum of two per person to prevent ticket hoarding.

Despite the positive reception, some passengers raised concerns about the booking process and crowd control.

A passenger, Maria Balogun, alleged that some staff deliberately made online booking difficult, forcing travelers to pay bribes to board. She also highlighted overcrowding issues that led to damages at one station.

Iloanusi acknowledged these concerns and promised improvements in the coming days. He urged passengers to follow the rules, be orderly, and ensure they have valid identification to enjoy the service.

Another passenger, Isah Slaisu, commended the initiative for its cost-saving benefits but called for better organization to enhance the experience.
