At the wake service last Thursday, family, friends, and loved ones paid their final respects to celebrate the impactful life the deceased lived. They also offered support to the grieving family during this challenging time.
Led by Reverend Gbenga Awolalu of the Anglican Diocese Church of the Epiphany, attendees gathered to seek solace in prayers and find comfort amidst their loss.
Hymns filled the air, fostering an atmosphere of reverence and reflection. Reverend Awolalu delivered a sermon that focused on how Princess Okubena-Dipeolu had lived her life to please God, drawing inspiration from 1 Thessalonians 4:1:
“Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.”
Canon Chris Taiwo also took the stage to offer a heartfelt prayer, specifically for the deceased’s children, invoking divine strength and comfort upon them in their time of grief.
A representative from LASU, where Prof. Okubena-Dipeolu had worked, stepped forward and delivered a moving eulogy. Through heartfelt words, cherished memories were shared, and the representative highlighted the remarkable achievements and exceptional character of the departed.
They emphasised that the late Prof. Okubena-Dipeolu came, saw, fought, and conquered, leaving an indelible mark in the hearts of those who knew her.
The atmosphere grew increasingly emotional when the deceased’s brother took the floor to pay tribute to his sister.
Overwhelmed with grief, he expressed how the family had lost the backbone of their support system. He recounted the unwavering presence and support she had provided in their lives, leaving a void that would be challenging to fill.
Close friends of the deceased then stepped forward to share their personal stories and the journey they had embarked on together from childhood to adulthood. They fondly reminisced about the milestones they had achieved side by side, underscoring the significant impact Prof. Okubena-Dipeolu had made in both of their lives.
Lastly, Prof. Okubena-Dipeolu’s son, Mr. Seun Makinde, took the opportunity to express his gratitude and admiration for the profound love his mother had showered upon him and his siblings.
He marveled at how she extended her love not only to her own children but also to everyone she encountered.
