Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano State Sector Command has confirmed the death of 21 athletes of the Kano State contingent returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the fatal road crash occurred at Gadar Yankifi (Yankifi bridge) in Garun Mallam Local Government Area on Saturday.
The Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, earlier in a statement said 20 of the athletes died in the road crash.

However, the Sector Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, in a more recent statement on Saturday, said a total of 32 persons were confirmed to be involved in the crash, comprising thirty-one male adults and one female adult.
Labaran said, “We regret to announce a fatal road traffic crash that occurred today, Saturday 31st May 2025, at approximately 1230hrs along the Kano–Kaduna Road, precisely at Gadar Yankifi in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.
“The unfortunate crash involved a single vehicle, a Toyota Coaster Bus with registration number KN041 A17, belonging to the Kano State Government.”
According to him, preliminary investigation indicates that 21 persons sadly lost their lives, while the remaining sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Following this, the injured victims, as well as the remains of the deceased, have been evacuated to Nasarawa Specialist Hospital, Kano.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander M.B Bature, who expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, re-emphasised the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety on our roads.
Thereafter, Bature strongly warned drivers against speeding, overloading, and all forms of traffic violations, which remain major contributors to road crashes.
The FRSC Boss extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for the repose of their souls. He also wished the injured victims a speedy and full recovery.
According to him, the agency would continue to intensify its patrol, surveillance, and public enlightenment efforts to prevent future occurrences of such tragedies, adding that road safety is a shared responsibility, and all driver must play their part in making our roads safe for all.
