Eko Hot Blog reports that Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has mandated an audit of the accounts of the 23 Local Government Areas for the past three years.
Fubara issued the directive to the state’s Auditor General on Wednesday during the swearing-in ceremony for the Caretaker Committee Chairmen of the local councils at the Executive Council Chamber of the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The governor stated that the audit is intended to serve as a check for the incoming chairmen and to ensure greater accountability within the local councils.
Fubara urged the caretaker chairmen to protect the interests of their constituents, avoid seeing themselves as superheroes, and demonstrate that the government was right in appointing them.

He cautioned that their tenure would be short, as the process for local government area elections would soon begin.
The governor also ordered a probe into the tenures of the outgoing local government chairmen, asserting that the current events in the state are a product of democracy.
He warned against violence, stating it is not his approach, and urged the officials to address the salaries and entitlements of the outgoing chairmen.
Fubara emphasized that the fight against tenure extension is not just about the state but the entire country, as allowing it in one state could lead to it being replicated nationwide.
He noted that Rivers State is not doing anything unusual, as most states in the country are also managed by caretaker committees.
