The severe flooding in northeastern Nigeria has claimed at least 30 lives and affected over one million people, according to authorities. The disaster was triggered by the collapse of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River due to heavy rainfall, resulting in the state’s worst flooding since a similar incident 30 years ago. Many residents have been forced to evacuate their homes.
The flood also devastated a state-owned zoo, displacing crocodiles and snakes into flooded communities. In response to the flooding, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the immediate closure of the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri, as floodwaters have compromised the integrity of the drugs stored there.
