AN ADDRESS DELIVERED BY THE GOVERNOR OF LAGOS STATE, MR. BABAJIDE SANWO OLU ON THE OCCASION OF THE OFFICIAL HANDING OVER OF KEYS TO ALLOTTEES OF ALHAJI LATEEF KAYODE JAKANDE GARDENS, IGANDO ON THE 31ST OF JANUARY 2020.

It is with great pleasure that I deliver this address on the occasion of this landmark occasion marking the handing over of keys to allottees of Alhaji Lateef Jakande Gardens, Igando in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

I am glad to say that this epoch-making event marks yet another chapter in the series of creative and sustainable efforts of this administration in enhancing the fortunes of Lagosians. I am indeed delighted to see the policies of our government resulting in transformed lifestyles for the residents of the State. Homes as you all know are critical needs for stability in all areas of life. Home ownership is a mark of great accomplishment in all realms. Hence, my joy knows no bound as our people here today accomplish a major achievement of home ownership during our tenure.

This event which I know will be on-going has definitely shown our irrevocable commitment to the articulation of our set goal of building a 21st Century Economy. The attainment of the vision of a Greater Lagos is a passion that keeps the engine of the administration running. We have your mandate and we regard that as sacred as we continue to strive for excellence in all areas of life. Governance is about impact. We are indeed happy that the building of a 21st Century Economy has begun touching the lives of our people, building confidence and generating and restoring the hope of a better future in the minds of all.

I must definitely, in this regard, salute the people of Lagos for the great confidence and trust reposed in the ability of this government to lead us all to the envisaged destination of greatness. It is indeed a meaningful journey fuelled by our irrevocable determination for something better, something greater for our people and our State.

As a government that delivers on his promises to the people you can all recollect that during the commissioning of Alhaji Lateef Jakande Gardens in September 2019, we promised that the keys would be handed over to the allotees before the end of the first quarter of this year and here we are today with the beneficiaries of these dividends of democracy.

With the joint effort of the State Government and collaboration of other stakeholders in the built sector, we are fully resolved to find means of trimming the cost of building houses so as to reduce the entry barrier to home ownership. It is our dream the more Lagosians, particularly first time home owners will experience this kind of joy. We will all enjoy the benefits of the T. H. E. M. E.S. agenda of this administration.

I want to let us know that we are holding useful discussions with takeholders in related fields to arrive at solutions to the increasing cost of building. Also, we have also started implementing policies that will make the environment more conducive to private sector participation and joint ventures investment in provision of mass houses especially in urban areas where the housing deficit is quite acute. This is a two pronged policy as we also move in to the rural areas to open them up for speedy economic development by locating housing scheme in the rural set ups.

In view of the ever increasing population of Lagos, and the importance of housing as a critical human need, I wish to say that collaboration nd partnership with private sector participants is very important .The task of provision of houses for all cannot be undertaken by government alone. We hereby invite interested investors to come forward to collaborate with government in this regard.

The twin issue of affordability and access to homes is very germane to housing. This is going to be the crux of our policy activity in this year. As we strive to push down cost of building, we will also work our mortgage solutions that will greatly beneficial to Lagosians both in the formal and informal sector.

Let me put on record that the Ministry of Housing is the arm of government statutorily charged with the responsibility of providing adequate and good quality housing in Lagos mega city. One of its major duties is also to facilitate easy access of its Citizens. In this regard, the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Housing will continue to make the people of Lagos the envy of all in terms of provision and access of the citizenry to decent and affordable housing. The activities of LagosHOMS in ensuring that the homes are released to qualified Lagosians are residents and tax payers are also commendable. I know that the housing deficit is so huge at this point hence many may feel denied but let us keep up hope as more schemes will soon be ready for allocation to beneficiaries.

At this juncture, I must reiterate that the State government will continue to build not only to make home owners but to grow the economy as the commercial activities and gains generated by home construction will empower our people financially and on the long run enhance the GDP of the nation. I am certain that contractors, masons, electricians, carpenters suppliers of building materials and unskilled laborers engaged along the value chain of designing and construction will have reasons to be grateful to the Lagos State Government.

At this point, I urge the new Home Owners of today to please protect government property and guide it jealously as to whom much is given much is expected.

I want to congratulate the allottees of this scheme today. They are the forerunners of yet many more home owners to be made during this administration. In a few months, more home units will be available in Igbogbo IIB, Sangotedo, Odo-Onosa/Ayandelu and Igando/Egan. I enjoin you to comply with all the rules and regulations attached to home ownership in the estate as stated in the Letter of Allocation. Also, they are to cooperate fully with our facility managers to ensure durability of all infrastructures provided.

As I hand over the keys to the home owners, I wish you all a happy and mutually rewarding co-existence.

Thank you all and God bless

Igbega Ipinle Eko, Ajumose Gbogbo Wa Ni o
