The administration of President Bola Tinubu has disbursed funds to address the backlog of salaries owed to the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of Federal Universities, as well as benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
This financial intervention, confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF), aims to alleviate ongoing tensions and restore normalcy to Nigeria’s public universities.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the OAGF statement confirmed that salary payments to NASU members have already begun, with numerous recipients verifying the receipt of their withheld earnings.
“The Federal Government has released funds for payment of the withheld salaries of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities,” the statement read, adding that funds have also been allocated for pension benefits under the contributory scheme.
This funding release comes amid a protracted strike by NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), which has paralyzed public university operations since Monday.
The unions’ Joint Action Committee (JAC) initiated the strike in response to non-payment of salaries for four months, a situation SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim emphasized as untenable.
According to Ibrahim, key university officials, including vice-chancellors, bursars, and registrars, have also been affected by the delayed payments.
In a bid to resolve the crisis, outgoing Minister of State for Education Dr. Yusuf Sununu held discussions with union leaders on Thursday, representing the new Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alaussa. Sununu assured the union that steps were underway to address their grievances and urged NASU and SSANU to call off the strike to resume educational activities nationwide.
As of this week, public universities remain closed pending further negotiations and payment confirmation.
