Gallagher Returns To Chelsea After Uncertain Atletico Transfer

Conor Gallagher is set to resume training at Chelsea’s Cobham facility on Wednesday after returning to London from a trip to Atletico Madrid, where his potential transfer remains uncertain.

The 24-year-old England international was in Madrid for five days, staying in a hotel and visiting Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium as part of a planned £33 million transfer.

However, the move has hit a snag after Chelsea’s £34.5 million deal to sign Spanish striker Samu Omorodion fell through due to unresolved personal terms.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that this development has complicated Atletico’s finances, as they recently spent £81.5 million to acquire Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez, leaving them needing to make a significant sale to fund Gallagher’s transfer.

While the transfer is not completely off the table, it is now in jeopardy.

Atletico Madrid had previously posted a photo of Gallagher at their stadium, indicating that he was close to finalizing his move. As an alternative, Chelsea could potentially sign Joao Felix from Atletico, who is open to returning to Stamford Bridge after a loan spell in 2023.

However, if an agreement for Felix is not reached, Gallagher’s move could collapse.

Chelsea is eager to finalize the sale to avoid losing Gallagher for free next summer, as he has just 11 months left on his contract. Gallagher, who captained Chelsea for much of the last season, also featured in five games for England during Euro 2024.
