Gas Shortage Sparks Nationwide Power Woes, TCN Confirms

Eko Hot Blog reports In a recent revelation, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially cited a gas shortage as the primary cause of the ongoing power supply crisis plaguing the nation. The TCN, in a statement released on Thursday, affirmed that the decline in available power generation is a direct consequence of constraints in gas supply to power-generating companies.

This gas shortage has reverberated across the grid, impacting the bulk power available and subsequently disrupting the transmission to electricity distribution companies nationwide. Nigerians have endured a prolonged period of low power supply since December 2023, leading to widespread complaints and concerns.

Distribution companies, including the Eko Electricity Distribution Company, have actively addressed the issue, emphasizing that they bear no blame as they grapple with limited allocations from generating companies. Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, clarified, “TCN can only transmit what is generated,” underscoring the reduction in load distributed to distribution load centers.

Despite the challenges, Mbah assured the public that TCN is actively collaborating with stakeholders in the power sector to maintain grid stability. She expressed a commitment to gradually increasing electricity supply to load centers as gas supply improves to thermal plants. Mbah concluded with a plea for patience from the public, saying, “Please bear with us as we continue to work with stakeholders to ensure that supply through distribution companies to electricity consumers nationwide improves.”

The gas shortage’s ripple effect on various gas-fired grids has led to diminished allocations to electricity distribution companies, compounding the challenges faced by both TCN and distribution companies in providing consistent power supply to consumers. As the nation grapples with this power crisis, the critical need for robust transmission infrastructure comes into sharper focus. Stay tuned for further developments as efforts are underway to address and rectify the situation.
