General Hospital, Epe Marks World Pharmacists Day

General Hospital Epe has joined healthcare institutions worldwide in honoring the World Pharmacists Day 2024 under the theme “Pharmacists: Meeting Global Health Needs.”

The Pharmacy Department spearheaded the festivities, organizing health talks and awareness campaigns for various groups while distributing gifts to patients as part of the event.

Dr. Oluseyi Adesola, the Medical Director of General Hospital Epe, praised the pharmacy team for their dedication and expertise in managing medications and delivering top-notch healthcare services.

“I celebrate you today for your invaluable contributions to healthcare,” he stated.

Pharmacist Olayinka Lekuti, the Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services at the hospital, emphasized the vital role pharmacists play within the medical system.

“A Pharmacist is a healthcare professional responsible for controlling, formulating, preserving, and dispensing medications, while also providing medical advice and counselling on how to use medicines for maximum benefit and minimal side effects.

Our role is crucial in preventing drug interactions and ensuring optimal patient outcomes,” she explained.

Lekuti also highlighted the importance of quality pharmaceutical services in promoting patient well-being.

“We educate patients on the correct use of medications, such as the appropriate timing and dosage.”

She further elaborated on the pharmacist’s collaborative role, working closely with doctors, physiotherapists, and laboratory scientists to ensure comprehensive patient care.

“Pharmacists play an essential role in every medical institution, working collaboratively with doctors, physiotherapists, and medical laboratory scientists.

We are the final point of contact for patients because, after the doctor’s diagnosis, the prescribed medications are dispensed by the pharmacist,” she noted.

In her closing remarks, Pharmacist Lekuti urged patients to steer clear of self-medication, warning of the dangers it poses.

“Overdosing or underdosing can lead to serious health complications,” she warned, stressing the importance of professional guidance in medication use.
