Germany Weighs Rwanda Deportation Option for Migrants

Germany’s migration commissioner, Joachim Stamp, has proposed a controversial solution to curb irregular migration, deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda.

The plan would utilize existing asylum facilities in Rwanda, initially intended for a scrapped UK program, and conduct asylum procedures under UN supervision.

Stamp’s proposal comes amid rising tensions following a fatal stabbing linked to Islamic State, which has fueled far-right opposition and criticism of Germany’s migration policies.

The commissioner argues that focusing on refugees crossing the EU’s eastern borders, approximately 10,000 people annually, would be a more effective approach.

Rwanda has expressed willingness to implement this model, and Stamp suggests removing the “connecting element” in the new Common European Asylum System, which requires external asylum procedures to be conducted in countries with social connections.

While the European Union has agreed on new rules to handle irregular arrivals, the pact’s full implementation may take until 2025.

As Germany navigates this complex issue, Stamp’s proposal has sparked debate and raises questions about the future of migration policy in the EU.
