Anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is projected to win big in the eastern state of Thuringia, with 30.8% of the vote.
This would mark the far-right party’s first victory in a state parliament since World War II.
The AfD’s controversial top candidate, Björn Höcke, hailed the result as a “historic victory” despite his party’s unlikely chance of forming a government in Thuringia.
Höcke has been fined for using a Nazi slogan and has been designated as a right-wing extremist.
Meanwhile, in Saxony, the AfD is close behind the conservative CDU, with 30.4% of the vote.

The party’s co-leader, Alice Weidel, said it’s clear that voters in both eastern states want the AfD in government.
Immigration was a major issue in Sunday’s election, but the AfD also wants to stop weapons supplies to Ukraine.
However, with no chance of forming a coalition, the party’s victory may be symbolic.
The projections have sent shockwaves through Germany’s political establishment, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) set to win just seven seats in Thuringia.
As federal elections approach, Sunday’s results have exposed the unpopularity of Germany’s ruling “traffic-light” coalition.
The AfD’s rise has sparked concerns about the growing far-right movement in Germany.”
