In the advisory dated November 16, 2022, the west African country’s foreign ministry falsely claimed that the local authorities in Nigeria had directed hotels operating in residential buildings to shut down, although Nigerian security agencies had asked Abuja residents to go about their businesses and not panic.
“Accordingly, the public is advised to avoid non-essential travel to Abuja, due to the unpredictable security situation in the city, and the high danger of terrorism, criminality, inter-communal conflict, armed attacks, and kidnappings,” the now-retracted advisory reads in part.
On Thursday, Ghana’s foreign ministry issued an update, apologising for the earlier advisory it issued.
According to the update, the retracted advisory was unauthorised.
The Ghanaian foreign ministry noted that it was not aware of any threats targeted at Ghanaians in Nigeria.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to refer to the travel advisory published, Wednesday 16th November, 2022 advising against non-essential travel to Abuja and wishes to state that the statement was unauthorised,” the new security update reads.
“The Ministry is not aware of any threat targeted at Ghanaians who continue to live in harmony with their Nigerian brothers and sisters.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration regrets any inconvenience this may have caused to the travelling public.”
Ghana’s retracted travel advisory is similar to the ones issued by the United States, United Kingdom, and a few other countries in October 2022.
