EKO HOT BLOG reports that Chelsea legend Glenn Hoddle has criticized caretaker manager Frank Lampard for his use of midfielder N’Golo Kante in the Blues’ 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
Hoddle believes Lampard should have played Kante in a more defensive role to bring out the best in the French international.
Chelsea lost to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium with Martin Odegaard scoring twice and Gabriel Jesus adding another goal. Noni Madueke scored a consolation goal for Lampard’s side in the second half.
Speaking to Premier League Productions after the match, Hoddle expressed his dissatisfaction with Kante’s position on the field.
“For me, the midfield, I don’t get [N’Golo] Kante playing in that position going from there,” he said. “I see him as one of the best holding players in the world, defensive midfield players in the world still at 32. Do that job. Do what you are good at and then go and feed people who can go and play in those defensive areas.
“It does not suit him. He can’t go and play on the half turn, he can’t play with his back to play, he can’t score goals from that position. He might come up with one or two from distance playing in a deeper role. You have got to play the right players in the right position.”
Kante has been used in a more advanced midfield position in recent games, which has led to criticism from some pundits and fans. Despite this, Lampard has continued to play him in that role.
The defeat against Arsenal is a blow to Chelsea’s hopes of achieving something out of the current campaign. They remain in twelfth place, nine points above relegation zone.
