Global Fund Adds Five MICU Ambulances to Lagos

Lagos State Government has been reinforced by the addition of five new Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulances from the Global Fund.

These state-of-the-art ambulances, valued in the millions, were donated to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and come equipped with vital medical tools, including stretchers, trauma kits, patient monitors, defibrillators, respiratory kits, and other essential items needed for patient stabilization and support, aimed at improving emergency medical services across the state.

The handover took place with Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health; Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Health; and Mrs Wuraola Makinde, Director of LASAMBUS, receiving the ambulances from Mr Abiodun Omoloja, Coordinator of the Global Fund Grant Management Unit.

Dr. Ogunyemi expressed gratitude to the Global Fund for their valuable partnership, noting that the new ambulances will significantly expand LASAMBUS’s coverage and support the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance its emergency medical response systems.

“Emergency services are crucial, and we are committed to ensuring that our medical teams are well-equipped and highly trained,” she said.

He also announced plans to establish ambulance bases across all Local Government Areas to improve response times.

“Our goal is to make emergency services readily accessible,” he added.

Mr. Omoloja highlighted the Global Fund’s ongoing mission to combat HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), and Malaria, and its commitment to strengthening health systems in Lagos.

He noted that these new MICU ambulances bring the total donated by the Global Fund to 13, following an earlier donation of eight in 2022.

“These donations support the Governor’s THEMES Plus agenda by enhancing LASAMBUS’s capabilities and improving the state’s health metrics,” Omoloja concluded.
