  • The Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) has challenged African leaders to safeguard democracies.

Ann Iyonu, Director of the organization founded by the ex-President, urged leaders in a statement released to commemorate 2021 International Day of Democracy, EkoHotBlog reports.

The day is celebrated across the globe every September 15.

GJF charged governments across boards to deliver good governance, prioritise credible elections and guarantee the rights of all citizens.

The Foundation noted their dismay at the disregard for democractic values such as separation of powers and term limits.

Iyonu warned that such tendencies would negatively affect the continent and the people.

The statement reads “In many African countries, the essential values of democracy such as the rule of law, separation of powers and constitutional term limits are no longer adhered to.

“This situation poses threat to the survival of democracy in Africa, as the promises of peace, justice and human freedoms are daily betrayed.”
