No fewer than 100 shops at Timber Market in Nnewi area of Anambra State were allegedly set ablaze by the state police command.
According to Nnewi city, the police had gone to raid hideouts of Marijuana seller and smokers but could not arrest their targets.
In the fit of rage that accompanied a failed pursuit, the officers, quite oblivious of the highly inflammable substance around them, put on their lighter and the market became engulfed in inferno.
They “put on their lighter which caught fire immediately with saw dust”.
The videos shared online showed a section of the market in flames as some people in the area destroyed the police vehicle.
The officers were said to have escaped with other vehicles.
When contacted the police spokesperson in the state, Haruna Mohammed, denied the incident.
Mohammed said “I am not aware, but I will find out.”
In the past years, officers of the Nigerian Police Force have been accused of extensive abuse of human rights, extortion, extrajudicial killings, among other crimes.
Their inhumane activities led to the history #EndSARS nationwide protest across the country in October 2020.
