Ogun State’s new boxing hall has been named in honour of two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Executive Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, during a special event held to celebrate the boxing icon.

Governor Abiodun also bestowed a Yoruba name, “Omobowale,” meaning “the child who has come home,” on Joshua, recognizing his unwavering pride in his roots.
The Governor described the renowned boxer as a true ambassador of Ogun State, whose international achievements have brought immense pride to Nigeria.
“Anthony Joshua embodies excellence, resilience, and humility—values deeply cherished in Ogun State. Naming this boxing hall after him is our way of celebrating his legacy and inspiring future champions,” Governor Abiodun stated.
In a further gesture of appreciation, the Governor gifted Joshua a country home in Sagamu, his local government area, to reinforce the State’s acknowledgment of his accomplishments.
Governor Abiodun reiterated Ogun State’s commitment to nurturing sports talent and supporting grassroots development.
He highlighted the state’s rich tradition of producing global athletes like Oluwatobiloba Amusan and Falilat Ogunkoya and pledged to create more opportunities for emerging talent.
The Governor also praised Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), for his transformative role in sports development both in Ogun State and across Nigeria.
“Hon. Bukola Olopade has significantly shaped the sports landscape, from his tenure as a two-time Commissioner for Sports in Ogun State to his current position as DG of the NSC. His initiatives continue to promote growth, empowerment, and unity through sports,” Governor Abiodun remarked.
Hon. Olopade expressed gratitude to the Governor, commending his visionary approach to sports.
