Governors of the thirty-six states will meet today to discuss the proposed new minimum wage, having previously rejected the federal government’s ₦62,000 proposal due to financial constraints, while labor unions demand ₦250,000.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Governors of the thirty-six states have scheduled an emergency meeting for today, Wednesday, to address issues related to the proposed new minimum wage.
This development follows their rejection of the ₦62,000 figure proposed by the federal government, arguing that such an amount would force some states to borrow funds to pay salaries.
In contrast, the organized labor unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), have insisted on a ₦250,000 minimum wage. The decision to convene this emergency meeting came after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) stepped down the memo on the minimum wage on Tuesday.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained to the press that the FEC could not reach a decision on the minimum wage because it involves multiple stakeholders, including local governments, state governments, the federal government, and the organized private sector.
But the Acting Director on Media and Public Affair of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Halima Ahmed, told Daily Trust that governors would meet on Wednesday by 7pm in Abuja over the matter.
this online media platform understands that the organised labour are scheduled to meet today also over the outcome of the FEC meeting and take a stand on their next decision.
His comments, seen as a subtle jab at Wizkid, have ignited discussions among fans and followers of both music stars. Basketmouth’s remarks underscore the ongoing rivalries and dynamics within Nigeria’s vibrant entertainment scene.
