Eko Hot Blog reports that the Federal Government has commenced the prosecution of 196 suspects, including INEC officials, for various electoral offenses committed during the 2023 general elections.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Habeeb Lawal, revealed that the suspects are facing charges ranging from vote-buying and unlawful arms possession to dereliction of duty by INEC officials.
Lawal noted that the cases are being prosecuted pro bono by NBA members in magistrates’ courts and high courts across the states and FCT.
INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said the commission will not condone bad behavior and that future offenders will be held accountable. He stated that partnering with the NBA will serve as a deterrent and reinforce INEC’s resolve against electoral malpractices.
According to rights activist Jackson Omenazu, severe punishment for offenders irrespective of status is key to delivering balanced elections. He urged the media to escalate the matter to prevent it from being swept under the carpet.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria Afam Osigwe emphasized matching actions with words by ensuring those who violated electoral laws face justice while law-abiding participants have their gains in court.
