Former Head of State and Elder Statesman, General Yakubu Gowon, has warned Nigerian youths against a civil war that may bring permanent doom for the citizens of the country.
Gowon gave the warning while speaking at a lecture on “Rejigging the Security Architecture of Nigeria” in Abuja on Saturday.
The former Head of State, who described war as an unpleasant situation, warned that a new civil war will take Nigeria backward in harrowing and unimaginable dimensions.
General Gowon, who was represented by a former Governor of Bauchi State, Major General Chris Abutu Garuba, further stated that those who have fallen victims to civil war would not wish Nigeria to experience another one after the war between 1967 and 1970.
The former Head of State in January 1966 to July 1966 expressed deep concerns over the growing tension among the youths in the country just as he enjoined the Federal Government to tackle the challenge.
Also speaking at the event, a Professor of African History, Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Olawale Albert, added that a new civil war will only escalate the problems bewildering Nigeria.
“If you see war, you will run. It is only those who have never seen war that can call for it. It does not pay anyone,” Prof. Albert said.
