Minimum Wage: ‘Grace Period Ends Tomorrow, Prepare For Action’ – NLC Warns FG

  • Minimum Wage: ‘Grace Period Ends Tomorrow, Prepare For Action’ – NLC Warns FG.

  • The NLC has given the Federal Government a grace period until midnight on June 11, 2024, to meet their demands.

  • Failure to meet the demands may lead to the resumption of nationwide industrial action by the NLC and TUC.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Organised Labour has firmly rejected any proposals for a ₦62,000 or ₦100,000 wage, deeming them “starvation wages” for Nigerian workers.

This stance was reiterated during the latest meeting of the Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage, where Labour demanded a ₦250,000 living wage for the average Nigerian worker.

Chris Onyeka, Assistant General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), emphasized Labour’s position during an appearance on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” show on Monday.

Onyeka highlighted that the one-week grace period given to the Federal Government, which started on June 4, 2024, will end at midnight on June 11, 2024.

Onyeka warned that if the Federal Government and National Assembly fail to meet the workers’ demands by the deadline, the NLC and TUC will convene to decide on the resumption of the nationwide industrial action that was previously suspended.

He stated, “We have never considered accepting ₦62,000 or any other wage that is below what can sustain Nigerian workers. We will not negotiate a starvation wage.”

“We have never contemplated ₦100,000 let alone of ₦62,000. We are still at ₦250,000, that is where we are, and that is what we considered enough concession to the government and the other social partners in this particular situation. We are not just driven by frivolities but the realities of the market place; realities of things we buy every day: bag of rice, yam, garri, and all of that.“From the Tinubu’s Alliance for Democracy were Bola Tinubu, Chief Segun Osoba, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, and Chief Bisi Akande, among others,” the statement noted.
