  • “To say you will not negotiate with them and also not take action against them, I cannot understand that.”

Renowned Islamic Cleric, Sheik Gumi, has called on the Kaduna state government to pay the ransom demanded by bandits who abducted Greenfield University students.

Recall that unspecified number of students were abducted on April 18 when gunmen attacked the tertiary institution.

Five of the students have been killed by the gunmen and they have threatened to kill 17 of them still in captivity if a ransom of N100 million and 10 motorcycles are not delivered to them.

Speaking on the issue when he featured on Africa Independent Television (AIT) on Tuesday, Gumi argued that while N100 million is a huge sum of money, it is not too much to sacrifice for the lives of the students.

He added that the security agencies can go after the kidnappers and retrieve the money after the students have been freed.

”Five souls were killed. Why? What amount of money is too big for us to save the lives of those five students, what amount of money?” Gumi asked.

“Secondly, we can give them the money to get the boys out of danger then go after our money. Nobody is saying you shouldn’t find them, you can get the two back.

“To say you will not negotiate with them and also not take action against them, I cannot understand that.”

The cleric further said he and Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna governor, have had a discussion on the issue but have “parallel views” on how to handle it.

The Kaduna state government has over time maintained that it will not negotiate with bandits.
