A Non Governmental Organization,NGO under the aegis of Smiling Through Initiative has called on Government at all levels to enact laws that will protect the girl child from rape and other gender related violence that is ravaging the society.
Volunteer head of the initiative in kaduna and katsina Dr.Omolola Shegun Micheal made the call during a sensitization campaign in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child in kaduna.
The Convener of the program explained that the campaign with the theme-my voice, our equal Future was targeted at addressing the challenges of the girl child to promote empowerment as well as fulfilment of her human rights.
According to Dr.Omolola Shegun, massive investment in education for both male and female children with enterpreneurship development will go along way in cubing the menace of rape in the society
He pointed out that the rising cases of the menace could be attributed to idleness and inability of those involved to be productively engaged for self reliance
Dr.Omolola said the family unit had major roles to play in curbing rape as parents must educate their children at home and intensify their intergration as husband and wife, noting that sixty percent of rapist in a study are people who are legally married or have sexual partners.
Guest Speaker at the event and SDG champion Mr.Yumar Sam Tension stressed the need for elimination of all discrimination against the girl child which had deprived them from achieving their potentials.
