Residents of a Guatemalan town set the city hall on fire after the government refused to relax coronavirus restrictions there, local media reported on Monday.

The building was set alight late Sunday in San Lucas Toliman, in the south of the country, after President Alejandro Giammattei announced which municipalities could resume different levels of activities.

The gradual reopening includes transport, shopping centres, churches and restaurants.

San Lucas Toliman was classified as remaining under a red alert and ordered to maintain a lockdown.

Arguing that the town had few coronavirus cases, protesters threw stones at the city hall and set the building and two motorcycles on fire, daily El Periodico reported.

The government started reopening the economy despite COVID-19 cases still being on the rise in many areas.

The Central American country has confirmed 45,053 novel coronavirus infections and 1,734 deaths.
