Guinea Bissau: Over Confident Super Eagles Defeated On Home Ground

  • Nigeria’s over confident Super Eagles team defeated by underdogs Guinea Bissau on home ground in Abuja.

  • Despite the presence of star rated Victor Osimhen, the Super Eagles found it difficult to produce anything on the attack against Guinea Bissau.

  • Francis Uzoho the villain again behind the stakes in goal.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a surprising turn of events, Guinea Bissau claimed their first-ever victory against Nigeria’s Super Eagles, defeating them 1-0 at the Abuja Stadium on Friday, March 24th, 2023.

Despite the presence of Napoli’s prolific striker, Victor Osimhen, who played the full 90 minutes, Nigeria struggled to break down the visitors’ resilient defence and secure the necessary points to remain in contention for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

EDITOR’S PICKS:

The match began with Nigeria in full control, dominating possession and creating chances. However, after the 20th minute, Guinea Bissau began to assert themselves, with a long ball finding Mama Balde in the 29th minute.

The forward took advantage of the opportunity, catching Nigeria’s defence off guard and slotting the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, giving Guinea Bissau a crucial lead.

Despite Nigeria’s efforts to equalize in the first half, they were unable to find a way past Guinea Bissau’s defence. In the second half, Guinea Bissau continued to pose a threat with their counter-attacking tactics, while Nigeria struggled to feed Osimhen the ball.

Nigeria’s best chances of the game fell to Samuel Chukwueze and substitute Paul Onuachu, but they were unable to convert them into goals. After 90 minutes of football and an additional five minutes of added time, Guinea Bissau emerged victorious, securing their place at the top of Group A with 7 points in 3 games.

The defeat was a blow to Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, as they now sit second in the group with 6 points in three games.

The Super Eagles must win the second leg of the fixture against Guinea Bissau on Monday, March 27th, at 5 PM to stand a chance of qualifying for the tournament.
