Gunmen Kill Benue Lawyer, Mike Ofikwu in Otukpo

An Otukpo-based lawyer and activist, Mr. Mike Ofikwu, was tragically killed by armed men at his residence in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday around 8 p.m. at the entrance of Ofikwu’s home on Otukpa Street. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants, who were trailing him, drove up in a vehicle and shot him while he waited for his gate to be opened.

A source, speaking anonymously, described the attack as shocking and surreal. “It was like something out of a movie. He had just returned from work and was waiting at the gate when two armed men approached and shot him before fleeing the scene,” the source said.

Neighbors who heard the gunshots rushed to the scene and took him to the hospital, but he had already succumbed to his injuries due to significant blood loss.

The news of Ofikwu’s death has plunged the Idoma community into mourning, with many struggling to comprehend the motive behind the killing. The late lawyer was a prominent figure known for his activism and advocacy within the community.

Police Public Relations Officer Catherine Anene confirmed the incident, offering condolences to the bereaved family and friends. She assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, stating, “Justice will be served.”
