  • Stronger Social Bonds: These countries prioritize close-knit communities and family support, fostering a sense of belonging.
  • Higher Trust Levels: People in these nations trust each other more, creating safer and more supportive environments.
  • Better Social Support: Access to reliable help during tough times contributes to overall well-being and happiness.

Nigeria has dropped three spots in the 2025 World Happiness Report, ranking 105th globally and 12th in Africa. This means there are 11 African countries where people are happier than Nigerians.

According to the report, these African countries ranked higher than Nigeria:

  1. Mauritius (78th globally)
  2. Libya (79th)
  3. Algeria (84th)
  4. South Africa (95th)
  5. Mozambique (96th)
  6. Gabon (97th)
  7. Côte d’Ivoire (98th)
  8. Congo (100th)
  9. Guinea (102nd)
  10. Namibia (103rd)
  11. Cameroon (104th)

The report highlights factors beyond wealth, focusing on social trust, community bonds, and overall well-being. People in these countries feel more supported by family and friends, which helps them manage life’s challenges. Households with four to five people tend to be happier, and many of these nations maintain strong family bonds. In happier countries, people trust each other more.

For example, if you lose your wallet, there is a higher chance someone will return it. Having someone to rely on is also essential for happiness, while many Nigerians feel alone in their struggles, affecting their overall well-being.

In 2011, Nigeria was ranked the happiest country in the world. By 2023, the country had fallen to 95th globally, and the decline continues. Issues like rising inflation, insecurity, and unemployment are affecting people’s happiness.

To improve happiness levels, Nigeria can focus on strengthening social connections, improving trust in leadership, promoting family bonds and community-based programs, and prioritizing mental well-being alongside economic growth. Although Nigeria’s ranking has dropped, the country can still find a path back to greater happiness.
