Hardship: Yorubas Told To Abstain From Participating In Nationwide Protests

Amid growing discontent across various regions of Nigeria, the organization has appealed for restraint and understanding during these trying times.

The Yoruba people, primarily hailing from the six southwestern states of Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Ekiti, and Oyo, have witnessed a surge in public demonstrations echoing grievances over the escalating cost of living. These protests have not been confined solely to Yoruba-majority states but have also garnered momentum in other regions such as Kano, Ogun, Niger, Sokoto, and Osun.

Reuben Fasoranti, the chairman of Afenifere’s elders caucus, underscored the gravity of the economic hardships faced by Nigerians while emphasizing the need for patience and forbearance. In a statement issued on Sunday, Fasoranti acknowledged the legitimacy of public concerns but urged citizens to refrain from actions that could exacerbate tensions.

“While acknowledging the hardships faced by our people, it is important to recognize that these economic measures, although difficult, are part of a larger strategy aimed at restoring economic prosperity and stability to Nigeria,” remarked Fasoranti.

The organization expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the economic challenges, vouching for the long-term benefits of the measures being implemented. Fasoranti called upon Nigerians to engage in constructive dialogue and support ongoing economic reforms, emphasizing the collective responsibility to navigate through the prevailing challenges.

The call from Afenifere comes amidst plans by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to stage a nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and February 28, 2024. The NLC’s decision follows an emergency National Executive Council meeting to address concerns regarding the economy and the nation’s security landscape.
