Kamala Harris, Tim Walz Hold First Rally Together
Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made their first joint appearance as the new Democratic ticket in a lively rally held in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the event, attended by thousands of enthusiastic supporters, marked the beginning of their campaign together.
Harris, currently the U.S. vice-president, introduced Walz as “a fighter for the middle class, a patriot,” and acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating that they were the “underdogs” in what is expected to be a close election but had the momentum on their side.
At the spirited Democratic Party rally, Walz, making his debut as Kamala Harris’s running mate, emphasized his rural roots and warned that former President Donald Trump would take the country “backwards.”
Addressing thousands of enthusiastic supporters just hours after being announced as Harris’s vice-presidential pick, Walz delivered a speech that contrasted his background and service with Trump’s record.
“He doesn’t know the first thing about service – because he’s too busy serving himself,” said Walz, a former army sergeant, football coach, and national guardsman.
The rally in Pennsylvania, a crucial swing state, was filled with energy and applause.
Walz, 60, is seen as a candidate who could appeal to rural and working-class voters in midwestern states who have previously supported Trump.
He recounted his small-town upbringing in Nebraska and his career, drawing some of the loudest cheers when criticizing Trump’s criminal record, which prompted chants of “lock him up” from the crowd.
He also took aim at the Republican challengers, calling them “creepy and, yes, just weird as hell,” a line that has resonated with the Harris campaign.

Walz expressed eagerness to debate the Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance, stating, “That is, if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.”
The rally also focused on key issues such as individual freedoms, abortion rights, and gun violence. Walz’s plain-spoken, folksy style was evident as he addressed the topic of abortion access with a straightforward declaration: “Mind your own damn business!” This remark drew an ovation from the crowd of over 10,000 at Temple University.
Harris and Walz are embarking on a five-day tour of key battleground states, to rally support and present their vision for the future. They are also scheduled to speak at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago from August 19 to 22.
As the two-term governor of Minnesota, Walz has overseen a highly productive legislative period, implementing a progressive agenda that includes guaranteeing abortion rights, passing gun control measures, and instituting paid family leave.
His tenure has faced criticism from Republicans for the state’s mask mandate, business and school closures during the Covid-19 pandemic, and his response to the rioting following George Floyd’s murder in 2020.
Earlier on Tuesday, JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, criticized the new Democratic ticket in Philadelphia, claiming that Harris’s choice of Walz shows her alignment with the “most radical elements of her party.”
The Trump campaign echoed this sentiment, stating, “Just like Kamala Harris, Tim Walz is a dangerously liberal extremist, and the Harris-Walz California dream is every American’s nightmare.”
