Eko Hot Blog reports that Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister for State Health and Social Welfare, has reaffirmed the ministry’s resolve to combat the illegal organ trafficking trade in FCT, Abuja, and across Nigeria.

Alausa relayed this statement in a post on his X handle today, February 2, 2024.
He disclosed the ongoing efforts to address the issue, stating that, “In our continuous attempt to crack down on the illegal organ trafficking trade in FCT Abuja, Perm. Sec. of Health, Ms Daju Kachollom, mni and I met with high-ranking officers in the Nigerian Police Force to discuss potential immediate and long term solutions that will bring justice to the victims, their families and quell further instances from occurring.”
Furthermore, Alausa highlighted efforts by the Ministry of Health to establish a sustainable infrastructure for organ donations and transplants across the country.
He urged Nigerians to consider the health risks and repercussions of illegal organ harvesting on themselves and their families.
Alausa emphasized that, “The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is determined to find all individuals involved and subject them to the full extent of the law. As well as provide the necessary support to further the Police’s investigation.”
Alausa had addressed the illegal organ harvesting in a recent NTA interview on January 27, 2024.
He highlighted stringent measures and active involvement of law enforcement and medical councils in combating the practice.
Emphasizing the government’s stance against quackery, he stressed four governance pillars and the importance of health beyond physical security.

Alausa urged against organ selling, citing health risks and legal consequences.
He also discussed meeting with the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical Council to develop a kidney plan and address healthcare challenges.
