The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a strong condemnation of the recent abduction of approximately 20 medical students and a house officer by bandits in Benue State.
The ministry described the incident as a severe violation of human rights and a substantial threat to the country’s healthcare system.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the students were travelling to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu when they were ambushed in the Otukpo area of Benue State and their whereabouts unknown since then.
In a press release, Ado Bako, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, conveyed the Ministry’s deep concern.
“The Ministry of Health is profoundly saddened and distressed by the kidnapping of these medical students. Their safety and well-being are our utmost priority,” the statement read.
The Ministry has urgently called for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted individuals.
It emphasized that healthcare professionals and students must be able to perform their duties without fear of violence.
“This violent act starkly highlights the ongoing dangers faced by healthcare workers in Nigeria. We must work towards creating a secure environment for them to serve effectively,” Bako noted.
The Ministry has urged security agencies to intensify their efforts to locate and apprehend the perpetrators.
“We are calling on all relevant security forces to use every available resource to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped students.
Those responsible for this heinous crime must be held accountable,” the statement urged.
The Ministry sent a stern message to the criminals behind these acts, urging them to cease their violence.
“We appeal to the perpetrators to respect human life and end these criminal activities that threaten the safety of innocent individuals,” Bako emphasized.
This abduction is seen as a significant setback in the country’s efforts to bolster its healthcare workforce.
The incident has intensified concerns about the safety of healthcare workers, particularly in areas prone to violence.
“We cannot overemphasize the importance of safeguarding our healthcare professionals. Any threat to their safety is a threat to the entire nation,” Bako added.
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely.
“We will not rest until the students are safely returned and justice is served,” the statement affirmed.
“We stand united with the families of the kidnapped students. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and we offer our full support,” Bako assured.
The ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all healthcare professionals and students throughout the country.
“We are dedicated to taking all necessary measures to protect our healthcare workforce and ensure they can operate without fear,” the statement concluded.
