The Nigeria National League team was en route to Abakaliki on Friday to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme pre-season tournament when the accident occurred.
Obi, who initially appeared to have only suffered a minor leg injury, was found unconscious when rescuers reached the heavily damaged section of the bus. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Onuimo Local Government Area of Imo State, where he tragically passed away.
His body has been taken to the morgue at the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) in Owerri. Meanwhile, the injured players and staff members have also been transported to FUTH for further medical treatment.
Previously, EKO HOT BLOG reports that several players and officials of Heartland FC sustained injuries in a serious accident while en route to Abakaliki for the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT Pre-Season Tournament.
The accident occurred near Okigwe, Imo State, according to a statement from the club. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but those injured have been taken to the hospital for medical care.
The club’s statement reads: “The accident happened at Umunna, close to Okigwe, still within Imo State.”
“The vehicle in its attempt to dodge an oncoming vehicle collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from another accident.
“Though no death was recorded some players and officials sustained injuries and have been taken to the hospital,” the statement from the club read.
