EKO HOT BLOG reports that Chelsea legend, Tony Cascarino, has told Gareth Southgate to remove Manchester United captain, Harry Maguire from England squad with immediate effect.
Cascarino wants the 29-year-old replaced in Southgate’s XI by West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice.
Rice is a defensive midfielder but Cascarino believes the West Ham man can do better in the defense than the struggling United captain.
Harry Maguire was named in the England side that lost 1-0 to Italy in Nations League on Friday night and has received a lot of backlash over his performances both for club and country.
Southgate himself has also come under fire for adding Maguire in his team with the European Championship runners-up being relegated from League A on Friday.
The Three Lions have conceded seven goals in the Nations League so far, one of those against the Azzurri.
Cascarino has come up with a solution for England’s defensive woes – and that involves West Ham midfielder Rice.
“I’ve banged on about this for ages, and I’m going to drive people mad about this – the best way for England to play is a four [at the back],” the former Chelsea star told talkSPORT.
“And I really think the best person to play in a four, because he’s quick as well, is Declan Rice at the heart of England’s defence. Absolute centre-half.
“Playing alongside someone like John Stones, having that pace is going to be really important to England in a back-four.
“Declan could play that position blindfolded. He’s a natural defender.”
