High-Profile Politicians Who Didn’t Survive The Ravaging Pandemic, COVID-19

2020 was an emotional and tragic year. Among the tragic incidents was the loss of lives to the ravaging pandemic, COVID-19.

Below are 10 prominent politicians who lost their lives to COVID-19 in the year 2020.

Abiola Ajimobi.

Late Abiola Ajimobi was a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before his demise. He was born on the 16th day of December, 1949. He died at the age of 71. Late Abiola Ajimobi was a Nigerian citizen who hails from Oyo State. Asides being a Senator, Abiola Ajimobi had functioned as the Executive Governor of Oyo State from 2011 to 2019.

Late Abiola Ajimobi, had contracted the deadly COVID-19 in the month of May 2020, After testing positive to COVID-19, Abiola Ajimobi suffered complications arising from COVID-19 that made him be on a life support machine in First Cardiology Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Unfortunately, his condition worsened as he went into coma following the COVID-19 complications and was declared dead on Thursday, the 25th day of June 2020.

Abba Kyari.

Late Abba Kyari became very popular in the year 2015, following his appointment as the Chief of Staff to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari in August, 2015.

On the 24th day of March 2020, there was an announcement on various media outlets that Abba Kyari had tested positive to the deadly COVID-19. He had contracted the virus following a trip he made to Germany nine days earlier.

Abba Kyari was later relocated from Lagos to Abuja for proper medical care on the 29th day of March, 2020. Unfortunately, Abba Kyari died on the 17th day of April, 2020.

Wahab Adegbenro.

Late Wahab Oluropo Adegbenro was born on the 5th day of June 1955. He died at the age of 65. Wahab Adegbenro hails from Ifedore Local Government Areas of Ondo State.

Besides being the Commissioner of Health for Ondo State, Wahab Adegbenro had functioned as the Vice Chairman of Ondo State Committee on Sports for the Disabled from 1997 to 1999. Subsequently, he got promoted to the position of the Chairman of Ondo State Committee on Sports for the Disabled, acting as the Chairman of the Committee from 1999 to 2002.

Thereafter, he became the Commissioner of Health for Ondo State before he died. He died of complications resulting from COVID-19 on the 2nd day of July, 2020.

Bayo Osinowo.

Adebayo Sikiru Osinowo was born on the 28th day of November 1955. Besides being a politician, he was also a successful businessman. Before his death, Bayo Osinowo was a member of the Lagos State House of Representatives. He was also a Senator who represented Lagos East at the 9th Nigerian National Assembly.

Unfortunately, Bayo Osinowo met his death on the 15th day of June, 2020 after battling complications related to the deadly COVID-19. He died at the age of 64.

Suleiman Adamu 

On April 30, a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Suleiman Adamu died after a brief illness. It was days after his death that the sample taken from him returned positive for COVID-19.

The state governor, Abdullahi Sule, confirmed that the deceased died from COVID-19 complications. Governor Sule said: “The deceased was admitted at Federal Medical Centre, (FMC) Keffi. He had symptoms of coronavirus, his sample was taken, but before it was out, he died and was buried. His result came out positive on Saturday (May 3).”

Shuaibu Danlami

A staff of Gombe Government House, Shuaibu Danlami, a director for special services and politics at the office of the SSG and a member of the state taskforce on COVID-19 died of the virus on May 31.

His death forced the state government to shut down the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and the Government House Clinic for disinfection. The chairman of the COVID-19 taskforce in Gombe, Professor Idris Mohammed confirmed that the deceased died of coronavirus.

Aminu Adisa Logun

Aminu Adisa Logun, was the Chief of staff to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State until Tuesday, July 7, when he died of COVID-19 complications.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, “Logun, an industrialist, a public intellectual, and an elder statesman, died Tuesday evening of complications from COVID-19. He died only a few hours after the test of his result returned positive.”

Daily Trust Saturday reports that a seven-day mourning declared in honour of the late Chief of Staff would end on Monday. Logun was a pioneer industrialist in Ilorin and an alumnus of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos. He hailed from Ilorin, the state capital.

Harry Akande

Renowned Nigerian Billionaire Chief Harry Ayoade Akande, the Agba Oye of Ibadanland, died aged 77.

Akande passed away in the early hours of Saturday December 5th, 2020 as a result of Covid-19 complications.

Although, a statement released by the family did not state the cause of his death, a source close to the family hinted that the late billionaire might have died of complications from COVID-19.

 Buruji Kashamu

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain, and former lawmaker, who represented Ogun East Senatorial District, Senator Buruji Kashamu, died of COVID-19 complications at a Lagos hospital.

Kashamu was said to have been on ICU weeks before his death.

Buruji Kashamu was a Nigerian politician who served as a Senator representing Ogun East in the 8th National Assembly. Ogun East covers eleven local government areas: Ijebu North East, Ijebu North, Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu East, Ikenne, Odogbolu, Remo North, Sagamu, and Ogun Waterside.

 Tunde Braimoh

Tunde Braimoh, the lawmaker representing Kosofe Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, died after contracting Covid-19.

The former chairman of Kosofe Local Government died 10th July, 2020,  two months to his 60th birthday on 30 September.

Braimoh, a lawyer was the Bamofin of Ketuland. He was popularly called ‘Big Daddy’.

 

He had an LL.B from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye and was called to the bar in 1989.
