Hijab Controversy: Hoodlums Attempt To Set School On Fire

Unidentified hoodlums threatened to set fire to the Surulere Baptist School in Ilorin on Monday, but security personnel intervened.

There is also a church on the grounds of the academy.

At around 5 p.m., unidentified hoodlums set fire to tyres and hurled them onto the school grounds.

Safety personnel on the scene, on the other hand, acted quickly to put out the fire, which would have caused significant harm to the buildings.

Although no arrests have been made, security has been beefed up around the ten Christian mission schools in Ilorin that were shut down by the state government in the wake of the state’s hijab controversy between Muslim and Christian communities.

Mr Okasanmi Ajayi, the spokesman for the State Police Command, confirmed the development when contacted on Tuesday morning.

Mr Mohammed Lawal Bagega, the Police Commissioner, he said, ordered the DPO in charge of the area to “clear all unused tyres within the area, and beef up security.”

The police officers on the scene, according to Ajayi, retrieved the tyres, extinguished the fire, and brought the situation under control.

To avoid a significant breakdown in law and order, the government ordered the closure of the ten schools involved to be extended on Monday.

The Christian community has demanded that no hijab be worn in their schools, and that the government turn the schools over to their owners.
