Nigeria Tightens Health Surveillance Over HMPV Outbreak

  • Nigeria initiates surveillance for travelers from China amid HMPV Outbreak surge.
  • The respiratory virus has caused overcrowded hospitals and fears in China.
  • Health authorities aim to prevent HMPV spread with preventive measures.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to activate surveillance measures for inbound passengers from China following a surge in cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus currently causing public concern in the Asian nation.

Reports indicate that HMPV cases have spiked across northern Chinese provinces this winter, particularly affecting children under 14. Videos circulating on social media show overcrowded hospitals, prompting fears of a broader health crisis.

In response, Chinese authorities have implemented measures such as increased case monitoring, mask mandates, social distancing, and frequent disinfection of public spaces to curb the virus’s spread.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that neighboring countries, including Cambodia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, are closely monitoring the situation. While some cases have been reported, widespread outbreaks have not been observed in these regions.

In Nigeria, health authorities are stepping up preparedness. John Oladejo, Director of Special Duties at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), confirmed that surveillance measures, such as passenger quarantine, would be implemented for travelers arriving from China.

“The Federal Government will activate surveillance measures, like quarantine, for passengers coming in from China,” Oladejo stated during an interview on Sunday.

This proactive approach aligns with global efforts to mitigate the risk of cross-border virus transmission and ensure early detection and response to potential outbreaks.
