HND Students, Who Dig Wells To Fund Education, One Other Die In Kabba Well

Three Higher National Diploma (HND) students, who dig wells to fund their education, on Monday night, died inside one of the wells they had dug in Kabba, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

A fourth person, a friend of the students that had completed his National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, service year and got married recently, also died in the same well.

Their names are David, Sunday, Ayo and Ogbekedo. Sunday and Ayo are of same parents.

The mistress of at St. Mary’s Primary School, Kabba, Mrs Agnes Baiyere, contracted the deceased to dig a well in front of her newly-constructed four bedroom apartment in Zango quarters.

The teacher, according to sources, contracted David who invited his friends to carry out the job, which they reportedly spent a week to dig with the cover and plastering of the outer part.

However, two of the deceased were said to have gone back on Monday evening at about 6p.m. to evacuate some broken blocks that fell into the well.

One of the deceased, who entered the well first reportedly complained of dizziness while still inside, prompting the other person to quickly move in to rescue mission, which turned awry as the two became trapped in the well.

As news of their predicament filtered round, the two other workers reportedly raced to the well to rescue their colleagues, but they reportedly suffered same fate as they were equally trapped.

The wailing of the landlady and tenants drew the attention of sympathisers to the scene as other diggers became scared of entering the well for fear of being trapped.

It was gathered that it took extra efforts of the staff of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Kabba office, to evacuate the trapped persons; three of whom had already died while the last person died on his way to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the owner of the house collapsed on sighting the evacuated corpses and has since been rushed to the hospital, where she is now receiving treatment.

The deceased, aged 30 and 35, have been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital Kabba for autopsy.
