Member, House of Representatives, Epe Federal Constituency, Honourable Wale Raji, on Sunday paid a visit to the home of Moradeun Balogun, who was stabbed by robbers and allegedly denied treatment by a Lagos hospital, which eventually led to her death.
Ekohotblog recalls that on Monday, Moraduen was robbed of her laptop and stabbed on her way from work at Charity Bus Stop, Gbagada and taken to R-Jolad hospital where she was denied treatment because she couldn’t provide a doctor’s report.
Speaking during the visit, Hon Wale Raji said the the death was an unfortunate one which could have been avoided while promising to table the matter before the House of Reps on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to him, the 8th Senate Under the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki passed a law that victims of gunshots should be attended to first by hospitals.
He said, “Moradeun’s case is another unfortunate incident that could have been avoided. We need to look beyond criminalising the rejection of robbery or accident victims and look at the appropriate sanctions for such.
“I will table the issue before the House on Tuesday during sitting. We need to make sure that we no longer lose a life in a needless way again, ” he said.
Hon Wale Raji said that his visit was an over sight function as the family of the deceased are members of his Epe constituency.
The mother of the deceased, Opeoluwa Balogun, recalled the unfortunate incident that has thrown the family into mourning.
According to her, she still spoke with her daughter around 6:30pm on the fateful Monday before the family got a call later in the evening that they should come to R-Jolad hospital because her daughter had been stabbed.
“On Monday evening around 6:30 pm, my phone crashed and needed to get a new one. So, I went to the nearest phone store to buy another one. When I got there, they didn’t have the phone I wanted to buy, so I called my daughter to ask about the latest phone. She told me to get Infinix and that was the last time I spoke to her.
“Around 7:30 pm, we were about having dinner when a call came in on her dad’s phone. They told us to rush down to R-Jolad hospital because our daughter had been stabbed by armed robbers and they (good Samaritans) were taking her there.
“We abandoned the food and I drove because my husband was already panicking. While going, my husband still thought those that called were 419s, so he decided to speak to our daughter to be sure. When she was put through on phone, what she said was “daddy, I am dying”. That was the last time her dad heard her voice.
“Few minutes later, we got another call that we should come to Gbadaga General Hospital. When we got there, I was told to drop her data so they could come input her detail. However, I insisted I see my daughter. When I eventually saw her, I held her in my arms and called her name thrice but she didn’t respond. There was a gapping hole around her shoulder blade. She was a good girl till the end,” she said.
Her father, Adegboyega Balogun, who also spoke during the visit said that he appreciated the efforts of Nigerians over the issue and the comments and feedbacks they have received so far about Moradeun showed that she was a good girl till the end.
He said that, as much as all the efforts won’t get her back to life, it is important to ensure that no more life is lost the way her life was cut short.
“Left to me, I would have said we should drop this but we need to ensure that someone else doesn’t fall a victim to what cut Moradeun’s life short, ” he said.
