The round of 16 match between LASU and Education District 3 was highly explosive, from the blast of the centre referee’s whistle.
The only goal of the match was scored by forward, Prof. John Adeogun under the very first minute of the difficult encounter.
The goal could arguably pass for the fastest goal of the competition. It was a masterpiece and a television goal as well.
The opponents took the kick off, trying to get to the LASU end of the field, but, a quick interception by central Defender, Sam Egorgor, who wasted no time locating pacey midfielder, Wale Amodu, sending a defence splitting pass to Prof. Adeogun. The scorer, in a good position, ran from the hallway line, towards the goalpost, with the goalkeeper already off his line, Prof. Adeogun looped the ball over the head of the onrushing goalkeeper for the beautiful goal. The goal was greeted with jubilation by the few supporters of LASU team and others at the field.
The goal brought the best out of the losers, as they kept pushing for an equaliser, but, the water tight defence of the team led by midfield libero and the captain, Dr. Fatai Abiodun Abatan, held on till the end of the first stanza, without conceeding any goal.
LASU, too had some chances, but, didn’t do well to convert them.
There was a call, for penalty as the opponents’ defender handed the ball in the vital area, the referee ignored the call.
At the end of the first half , it was LASU 1-0 against Education District 3 .
The Second half started on a fast tempo, with LASU taking the kick off.
It was box to box action as both teams had chances, but, LASU was resolute and held on to the slim margin.
There were moments of anxiety as the match went to the last minutes, with injuries to the dependable central Defender of LASU, Sola Ashade and safe hands, Jonathan Balogun, who stood between the sticks, keeping the rampaging opponents at Bay with great saves.
In the dying minutes of the match, Coach Thompson Omosaiye brought in defender, Tunde Jimoh for left full back, Dr. Rilwan Mustapha, who limped out of the field with a slight injury. The substitution paid off as he thwarted most of the moves by the Education District 3 boys that came to his wing.
The match ended 1-0 in favour of LASU and thus qualified for the quarter final. It will now meet LASUTH on Wednesday, 21st September, 2022 at the Lagos State Rehabilitation Centre, Isheri-Olofin, Ojodu, Lagos. Kick off time is 2.00 p.m.
