The Federal Government has lambasted the new guidelines by the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that seeks to consider granting asylum applications to members of IPOB secessionist groups.
Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed on Tuesday said that no member of IPOB would be granted asylum in the United Kingdom because they have been “designated as a terrorist organization” by the federal government.
According him, considering asylum to the organization is not only disrespectful to Nigeria, it is also a sabotage of the fight against terrorism and a threat to the security of the country, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
“IPOB is not only proscribed but also designated as a terrorist organisation here in Nigeria, the United Kingdom’s decision is disrespectful to Nigeria as a nation.” Lai Mohammed was quoted as saying on Tuesday to News Agency of Nigeria.
According to him, It was intentional for UK Government to wait until this critical time when Nigeria faces security challenges to take such action. He said there are certain questions that the United Kingdom must answer to Nigeria.
He linked UK decision to that of Nigeria granting asylum to IRA members in 1998.
“If we could go down the memory lane, what the UK has done is like Nigeria offering asylum to members of the IRA before the 1998 Good Friday Peace Agreement,’’ he said.
