On Saturday, November 14, 2021, Alhaja Wakilat Omowunmi Ashiru performed a hallowed walk of honour into the septuagenarian ranks amid endless entertainment and gaiety.

This was during the occasion of a surprise birthday fete organised to welcome a loving mother, wife, friend, colleague and associate into a thumping landmark achievement.

The Celebrant

The surprise party held on November 14th was the climax to her birth anniversary, which fell on October 3rd and was celebrated with a pilgrimage, Lesser Hadji, to thank God.

However, on October 14th, at the Alegria Garden Reception Centre in Houston, Texas, friends and family members and the Lovely Sisters organised a surprise reception party in honour of Alhaja Wasilat Omowunmi Ashiru.

Highlights of the event included recitation and reading of the Quran, a projector slide showing a synopsis of the richly impactful six decades Alhaja Omowunmi has spent so far during her life’s sojourn, cutting of the birthday cake, a brief lecture, and presentation of gifts.

During his short exhortation, Sheik Huztaz Sheu Quadri Olaseni spoke on the need to live in tandem with the will and commandments of Allah.

Using Alhaja Omowunmi’s life as a paradigm, he noted that living a life of contentment and fulfilment can only come when we altruistically seek to bridge the gap for those in need of a helping hand.

The sheikh noted that every birth anniversary signals the passage of time with which we have been privileged to affect time and chance before being whisked out of time back to our eternal home.

This, according to him, is the burden of life that should necessitate our desire to devote our lives to good deeds in service to God’s purpose for our lives.

There was also no shortage of tributes, prayers and goodwill messages from friends and family who testified to Alhaja’s Omowunmi’s unassuming personality.

Otunba TJ Abass, a former President of Diaspora Lagosian Community, Eko Club International, led the cutting of the cake and the toast towards more years of fulfilment for the celebrant, described Alhaja Omowunmi as an incredible human being whose desire to affect her immediate magnetic field positively remains unfettered.

Alhaja Yinka Layeni, a close friend to the celebrant who was at the heart of the surprise party, also hailed Alhaja Omowunmi’s praiseworthy qualities of love, compassion, and a conscious attitude towards living with a great sense of intentionality.

Dr Sunkami Adeyinka, who recently celebrated her 60th birthday, welcomed the latest member of the septuagenarian class with warmth and grace. She hailed the celebrant’s capacity to always accommodate other people’s inadequacies, even at her own expense.

Mr Bashir Agoro, President Eko Club Houston, in a brief tribute, also lauded the Alhaja Omowunmi’s unassuming personality and prayed for many more years of gratification and accomplishments.
