How Pastor Adeboye Was Nearly Killed by a Former Governor
- The governor accused Pastor Adeboye of robbing the church
- Accused Adeboye of consulting with doctors
- The governor ultimately became a Christian
General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has given an account of how he almost got killed by a former governor during the era of military rule in Nigeria.
He made this known in the Friday reading of his authored daily devotional ‘Open Heavens’, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
Adeboye says the daughter of an ex-military governor approached him to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to her father, however, the governor who is not named in the devotional, raided the pastor with insults about his personality from his career as a professor of mathematics to his pastoral work.
The governor would eventually get converted into a Christian according to what Adeboye said, and also told the now 79-year-old pastor that he would have killed him if his gun were with him during their earlier meeting.
“Several years ago, one of my daughters begged me to talk to her father (a former military governor) about Jesus Christ. When I visited him, he attacked me with insults,” read Adeboye’s words in the devotional.
“You, look at yourself, Ph.D. in mathematics and you are going about carrying Jesus on your head. I know what you are doing. You think I don’t know your tricks? You are taking money from poor women and students so you can be rich. That is how you are using your own Mathematics. I also know about the miracles that they say are happening in your Church. We know the Babalawo’s (witch doctors) people like you consult”. He just went on and on and I kept smiling.
“When he finally got born again years later and was giving his testimony, he said, “If my gun had been nearby that day, I would have shot you.” I asked why he would have done that and he said: “Because I was trying to make you angry and the harder, I tried, the more you laughed and it was killing me.”
Adeboye has been in charge of the RCCG since 1981 and his time has seen the church grow astronomically to not only one of the largest churches in Nigeria, but also in Africa and the world.
Adeboye’s popularity down the years has meant he is the subject of attention and intense scrutiny from the public for what he says and preaches.
